Ralf, Program Lead Sustainability

Move from Otto Group Holding to Baur to OTTO.

What made you decide to move between Group companies?

With my first move to BAUR, above all I wanted to take on operational responsibility and gain leadership experience. It worked out very well in both cases. My move to OTTO was based on the wish to be able to pursue my increasing awareness of sustainability professionally and thus feel even more meaningful.

Why was moving to another Otto Group company the right choice for you?

I started my first move at the onset of the pandemic. At that time, the external job market was pretty much dead because everyone was in wait-and-see mode. Routes are short within the Group, which I like. For example, communication and my transition were also seamless.

How do you feel about having taken this step?

I feel great about both moves.

How would you describe your Group-internal moves in a nutshell?

Broadening my horizon!

How did you tackle things when you had decided to go ahead with the move?

Both times I chose people from my network, both Group-internally and externally, told them about my intentions to move and asked for their insights. Above all, I wanted clarity on what I was looking for in my next professional role. This approach sparked numerous inspiring conversations! I came across the two job vacancies completely by coincidence. Just like in sport – sometimes you have to dare your own luck to make the jump.

How did your team and your manager react when you told them the news about your Group-internal move?

They were very understanding both times. Of course, it's always hard to say goodbye to direct colleagues, but that's part of professional life. When it came to determining the exit and entry dates between the transferring and receiving divisions, the companies took my needs into account on both occasions.

What did you learn from this move?

Even though we belong to one corporate group, the individual company cultures are quite distinct. I mean this only as an observation, not as a judgement. I find these similarities and differences fascinating!

What advice would you give colleagues who are also considering a Group-internal career move?

Tell people in confidence about your intention to move companies and ask for their advice. If you have a supportive manager, involve them directly. And if you think I might be able to help, feel free to message me!
